Hazards in Shannon County
The Ozarks are beautiful and, at times, dangerous. These are the hazards most likely to affect Shannon County — how they happen here and how to stay safe.
Flooding
Our number-one hazard. The Current River and Jacks Fork rise fast. Turn around, don't drown.
Tornadoes & Severe Storms
Spring and summer bring tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. Know watch vs. warning.
Winter Storms & Ice
Ice storms can knock out power for days across our wooded, rural terrain.
Wildfire & Burn Bans
Forested hills and dry seasons raise wildfire risk. Most fires here are human-caused.
Other hazards
- Extreme heat — Ozark summers can be dangerously hot and humid; check on older neighbors and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.
- Earthquake — Shannon County is well northwest of the New Madrid Seismic Zone; a large quake there would be felt here but severe damage is unlikely. "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
